Works for sale

For collectors, I have a small selection of paintings available here. Pricing is based on size, time taken and materials used.  All materials are artists' grade and archival. Payments are handled by PayPal. Prices are a little lower here than on marketplace sites that have my work, as I don't charge myself commission. However, I can work to commission. Contact me by email if there is something you have in mind. The works here give you an idea of my fees.  If you would prefer to use a marketplace site which can offer returns, curatorial advice, view-in-a-room etc., you are most welcome to look at my page on Saatchi Art.

Cruciform 1. Gouache on wood panel painting

Washi, wax, watercolour, gouache, acrylic paint on wood panel.

30cm x 22.5 cm 2018

I like to use wax resist when drawing, and here I have used wax to create the cruciform shape on Japanese paper. I can't see the cross when I am drawing it so this method employs the element of chance. I have then used Japanese watercolours to colour the paper and reveal the image. This small paper cross has then been collaged onto a wood panel that I have prepared with many layers of gouache and acrylic to make an interesting and vibrant visual texture. Finally the work is varnished to protect the paper.

It would be best framed, and a good framer can advise the most suitable frame for your home. Please hang away from direct sunlight

Kiwi Vine in High Summer. Gouache on wood panel painting

Gouache and varnish on wood panel

30cm x 22.5 cm 2018

The dense greenery of a Japanese summer is amazingly active. Vines cover roads and houses and swallow anything abandoned. Years ago I had a studio on the second floor of a motor mechanics in Saitama and across the road were various small fields and orchards. There was one field covered in Kuzo vine and long grass. For years the vines and weeds grew and grew unchecked until someone came to clear them, and under the vines were about 8 dumped cars. Shoulda kept the weeds! Less of an eyesore. This particular vine, or the inspiration for it, belongs to a neighbour and grows next to a bridge over a canal in my street. As for the fruit, well it varies a lot. It looks better than it tastes.

This painting uses many layers and hues of gouache on a primed wood panel. It is difficult to photograph shades of green, but the painting on the whole is warm in tone. Blues and dark reds show through the brighter greens of the leaves. There is no focal point, a bit like with the dumped cars, the vine covers everything.

Please frame before hanging. Framing is really important, not just to protect the work, but to set it out from and against the wall. I would recommend a neutral colour and natural texture of frame for this work. Avoid hanging where there is direct sunlight.

Wintersweet Tree in Autumn: oil on linen painting

Oil on Linen

20cm x 20cm

Framed

The Robai "wax flower" or Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) is a popular Japanese tree often grown in gardens, or in extensive plantings in parks. It is most well known for it's waxy yellow flowers with a strong fragrance that are one of the first blooms after Risshun, the beginning of spring by the lunar calendar on February 4th. However the tree also has an excellent autumn display of green to deep yellow leaves against dark branches. This is a small study of the early autumn aspect as the leaves change with remnants of flowers.

This painting has been made with artists' grade oil paint on primed Belgium linen.

Hanging suggestion. This work is framed. It has a wooden border frame of 2.5cm and is 4cm deep. It is strung on the back and ready to hang. The total measurement of the framed work is 25cm x 25cm x 4cm.

Exit Strategy. Gouache and pencil painting on canvas board.

Gouache and pencil on canvas board

14.5cm x 19cm

2018

I often make small non-representative paintings between more sustained series of larger landscape works. I have always been interested in symbols, alphabets, notation and graffiti. This small painting called Exit Strategy (2018) has been made with gouache and pencil on canvas board. It has been varnished, but it would be best framed, and a good framer can advise the most suitable frame for your home. Please hang away from direct sunlight

Vesica Piscis: Gouache on canvas board painting.

Gouache and conte crayon on canvas board

24cm x 33cm (F4)

2018

While reading Robert Coon's book Earth Chakras, I became fascinated with his discussion of vesica piscis and the overlapping circles of power centres around the globe. Between longer series of landscape works, I often make smaller non-representative works on paper. These are small drawings employing shapes, symbols and colour study to make non-objective images. Before going to art school I studied Russian linguistics and trained as a language teacher. I have always been interested in semiotics, alphabets, symbols, graffiti, scrawl and notation. As a consequence, Coon's descriptions of the earth chakras and vesica piscis, was of interest to me.

Hanging suggestion: This small painting has been varnished and the surface is reasonably strong, however it would benefit from a simple frame with or without glass/acrylic front. A good framer can advise the most suitable frame for your home. Please hang away from direct sunlight

Memorial. Mixed media on canvas board painting.

Oil, gouache and pumice powder on canvas board.

15cm x 20cm

2018

All my cruciform paintings have their origin in the photographs I took of old and rusting tombs in the Montmartre cemetery, Paris. That was many years ago. It was an empty place full of fallen leaves and tree roots lifting the paths and before they put that hideous statue on Nijinsky's grave. By chance I stumbled across that and took a photo while it was still simple and dignified. I didn't take many photos all in all, being in the age of camera film and being on a backpacker's budget, but I have used them over and over in my studio work since then (then being 1988).

This small painting has a delicate surface and should be framed behind matte perspex. Framing it behind glass will make it like a mirror, given the dark surface, and difficult to see. Your framer can advise.
